The aim of counselling is to help you to overcome and deal with presenting or historical issues which are making you feel uncomfortable or causing emotional pain. The quality of the therapeutic relationship between therapist and client is of the upmost important in counselling to create an environment of safety, warmth and rapport to talk and explore difficult feelings. The counsellor works in a non directive way, they will not give advice, they will respect your views and give you the time and space to take responsibility, understanding and insight into your problems. As your personal insight begins to grow you may recognize the present and historical effects of other people and their actions and we can explore alternative ways to help to cope with them
Counselling is a talking therapy which can invoke a deep exploration of your thoughts and feelings, delving into and facing your feelings and experiences can seem scary, however with the help and support of a therapist you should start to feel better, therefore a regular commitment to counselling is essential to get the most out of your therapy.
